what good is a bass eq?

I recently got a lightning audio storm 1000.1 or something along the lines of that, and there is a little difference in this amp and my TMA 500.1 besides the power issue.

The 1000.1 has a lpf, gain, subsonic filter, and bass eq.

I set the lpf to 80hz and set the gain using the multimeter.

I played around with the bass eq but i dont really know what i am doing. It seems to peak a lot more at around 40hz instead of playing pretty much the same "loudness" like i got from the TMA.

Is this because of the bass eq function or because it is a poor quality amp? I think the amp has nice out put besides this peaking i get. does anyone know where i can find info or a bass eq or maybe you guys could help me out?

Usually those types of "bass EQ's" are just single frequency boost controls, which dont really operate like a true equalizer where you can also reduce the given frequency.

Most people who are into sound quality leave them off, or at the lowest dial setting (essentially off), as they muddy the sound.

One thing though, if you want to use it, even at a low setting, you should double check your gains with the DMM as those type of bass boost controls increase the output, and it might end up clipping sooner than you expect.

so turning it to the lowest frequency is my only option because there is no off. this will most likely reduce the peaking i am getting?

edit: i think i did that and it was a lot quieter than before with my tma 500.1 i set the 1000.1 to put out 600rms and the tma was doing like 450rms i will go play with it a little bit

Is it marked with any settings like + or -?

Your amp might be the rare type that can not just boost, but might be capable of decreasing theat frequency.

If thats the case, a center of the dial setting would be closest to off.
