Any Athlon 64 chip crushes P4

Clock speed is not even 1/2 of what is truly important in a processor. The Athlon 64 is vastly more efficient and does significantly better in games while staying subtantially cooler.....all the while being easy on your wallet

an Athlon 64 3500+ Venice (core name) are roughly ~$200 on newegg.com

I'd suggest building your own computer, it doesnt take any time at all (about ~30 minutes to install everything)

I am looking on TigerDirect.com right now, any recommendations???? I might just buy a whole new computer for her and sell her Celeron 2.4 ghz. I am looking to spend 4-500. She doesn't need alot of bells and whistles, but I do want it to go faster than her crappy Celeron!

unless she's a heavy gamer then this laptop would be fine for her everyday needs. i think she would be much happier with a simple laptop then a slightly faster desktop.

Know this - any enjoyment you're getting out of that P4 likely stems from the FSB (frontside bus) of the motherboard.

yea.. go with the amd 64s. to figure out what mobo you need, narrow the search down to cpu socket. i think amd64s are socket 939, and then you search for what features you want in a mobo, like SATA or PCI-E.. let me know if you need any help building one.

There are socket 754, as well as 939's for the athlon 64's. Always be sure to match the motherboard to the CPU. The 939's are slightly faster, or have the potential to be, where as you have a TON more choices in boards with the 754. So, it's kind of a toss up.

Ok, number 1 DON'T BUY TIGERDIRECT crap. Ok, their service sucks ***, end of story.

Number 2, newegg is awsome!

I have an amd 64 bit venice core, they are nice, you can overclock them alot also, and with the factory heatsink also.

What jmac said sounds like a good machine, once again, don't skimp on a motherboard...

Get an amd...they will smoke a P4 in just about anything. In fact, I am about to build a new machine with a 4000+ SanDiego chip.

Dont go cheap on the motherboard.
