What are the pro's / con's of on axis vs off axis tweeter and mid mounting?

Like the title says, what are the pro's and con's of on axis and off axis mounting when it comes to the tweeters and mid range speakers? If there is already a thread please provide a link, I searched but had no luck.

I am in the process of planning an upgrade and trying to decide how much work I have ahead of me.
