Weather Stripping?

Another random question from me...

Whenever a thread comes up about deadening the use of foam type weather stripping is always advised...

Now my confusion....where exactly in the process of deadening does weather stripping help? Where am I supposed to use this stuff?

like when looking at your trunk...on the bottom part (the car) should be some black rubber thing that seals the trunk, and on the lid should be a groove that follows the black rubber thing...put weather stripping all along that grove all the way around and it shuts down a ton of rattles...

it also makes your trunk harder to shut. i member the first few days i slammed the shit out of my trunk
