Have you tried stuffing the sealed enclosure yet?That may help with that echoey booming sound?You can do so much with a preamp eq.Id look into picking one up.I recommend running one in just about any system..Sure makes the difference.You can find one for under $100 bill these days

No I haven't tried that, Its already a lil bigger than "recommended''. What should I stuff it with? Polyfill, fiberglass?

The sub is in the rear corner of my trunk, firing form left to right across the car. Is that what you mean corner loading?

could also be that it lacks output down low, not that 50hz is too loud.....

Yes, when I asked about parametric EQ I was going to follow that up by suggesting you cut with 1 band centered around 60 Hz or so. This can even work with a graphic EQ, but it might not have a band that's close enough to really target the problem. It can't hurt to try it. I would do that before blaming the sub or the box, or anything else, really.

Very probably you're just picking up a peak there from the effects of the accoustics of your vehicle. I would first experiment with different aiming and positions of the box in the trunk. That can often have a more dramatic effect than a whole different box.
It would be an interesting experiment to see how the same box sounds in a different vehicle or even, say in your living room if you have a suitable amp to test.
