its just part of the top plate design. i believe it keeps more coil in the gap, thus extending the Bl curve to have higher Bl near full excursion.

i thought that was maybe it.. but figured i would ask... i guess this is a prototype lmt motor... most had a flat top plate.. i have one of those too:

**** you got alot of spare parts. must be fun to be you lol. i wanna try building one myself someday. have no clue how to do it tho. i mean.. i know how to put it all together, but what i dont know is how to determine what ohm the VC will be at, how many watts it can take, etc. building it i think would be quite easy
