video encoding program

Ok, so I'm trying to convert a video to H.264 for my iPod touch.

I have Vdub, but for some reason it wont encode. It keeps crashing.

Whatever!

So, I need a program that will re-encode a video file (xvid) into a H.264 file, however I want it to be able to accept filters, espicially a sharpen, color adjust, brightness/contrast and a resize. I need to make it look better.

Anyone have a free program they use I can download?
