USX4065 vs. USX2080

repost: I put this question in the speakers forum by mistake.

I am buying a pair of Infinity Kappa 60.5cs comps for my front doors and I am definately going to power them from an amp.

My problem is I am trying to decide if I should buy the 80w x 2 USX2080 for $90, or spend another $40 and get the 65w x 4 USX4065 (in case I want to power the rears)? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

The extra $40 could go to other things..... but the HU I am looking at is either the Alpine 7995 or 9815.

Can I get some feedback? I know that the 4dr Saturn is a small car and that I probably do not need to power the rears, but I don't want to realize AFTER buying the amp that I should have gotten the 4ch! There are 4 factory 6.5's in it now.

Thanks!

ps. JMac, I have read hundreds of your messages.... great info. Thanks to you and everyone else for all the help!

If it were me, rear fill wouldn't warrant an amp unless I had more money/room than I knew what to do with. Your head simply doesn't get close enough to really detect a difference at most volume levels.

Also, amping stock speakers can have very mixed results.

Where can you pickup that 2080 for $90 ? I'm looking at low power USX or blaupunkt t class.

So the rear fill would not help if it were amped? Should I bother to hook up the factory rear speakers to my HU? Or will that take away from the sound quality of the comps? Jmac.... you like those comps.... any thoughts? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

The US Acoustics can be had for $90 here.

Its soundstage issues if you remove the rear speakers alltogether. Many will say that no rears is the best soundsatage, but I prefer a little bit back there (based on my own experiment with unplugging the rears)... I'm pretty sure my passengers like to have some speakers back there too.

Since the factory wiring is already run, you could unplug the rear speakers and see what you think.... $0/-$90 option.

rear fill is a preference..unless u plan on competeing in sq, then it is a must.

with a four door saturn, having a touch of rear fill wouldn't hurt, but u could just run the factory speakers off the h/u and it would be plenty. most factory speakers can handle 50 to 75 wrms..IF it is clean power...so amping them should not be a problem, if that's what u want to do...

real quick...in factory CAR sound systems, the rears provide the majority of the bass response(go figure?) using the trunk as a "box"..so unless u have the upgraded factory system, ie haveing two or three ways in the back, the rears won't provide a bunch of the high end,effectively....but would help on the mid-range to mid bass area....

in the end..my choice, my car.....i buy the $90 amp, amp just the fronts, run the rears off the h/u and spend the extra $40 on something else...maybe a coaxil set for the rear...

thanks for the advice..... I agree with the idea, but my big worry is that I find out the factory rears do not have enough midrange, and I decide to through some MB Quarts back there to compliment the 60.5cs comps, and then end up needing to power them! I have never dealt with anything but factory speakers and HU's, so I do not know what should be amped.....

Would you say that the HU could give MB Q's enough power, if I need to upgrade the factory rears? (the HU being an Alpine 7995 or 9815)

if u get the alpine cda 7995 u will have to buy a four channel amp, if u are going to use the rears...that h/u has NO internal amp whatsoever..

with the 9815, well, i'm not familiar with it and can't find it.

more then likely any newer h/u will be more then enuff to provide power to the rears..most average in the 15 to 20 wrms range...they just won't provide the cleanest of power, but clean enuff for what ur after....BUT, if u r really worried about it..go ahead and get the four channel....power the factory rears, for now, then put some mb's back there as money permits....i'm not for sure of the power rating of the amp ur looking at..but keep the gains down and the factory rears will be fine

very sound advice.... thanks mrray! I think I have decided that for $40 more, it is better to have it and install it, then not have it and have to repeat the install later.... USX4065 it is!!

By the way, I had noticed that the 7995 was non-amped, but their new 2003 model 9815 looks sweet! Just can't bring myself to buy the new model year when I know that the 2002's will be dropping soon..... :p

thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the input Jmac.... I would definately like to hear what you could suggest on rear fill speakers that would give decent bass. I do not think I am going to go as far as putting a sub in my Saturn (I will save that for my next vehicle), but I am thinking of going with the Alpine 7995 (if I cannot find a decent price on the 9815 when it comes out next week), so I will need to amp the rears anyway......

and I went to listen to the Infinity 60.5cs comps after reading a TON of your messages (you seemed to like them).... thanks for all of the help... even if it was indirectly....
