Ups and Downs

Ok guys. First off I want to RAVE!!!

I took the 2 Pioneer TS-W300R 12"s out of my truck because I wanted the extra leg room(Single Cab), and I am gunna make a custom fiberglass box for 4 8"s to take care of that.

Anyways, I decided to put one in my girlfriend's ride, and went shopping for boxes. Well the cheapest I found was at Wally World, a Scosche Build Your Own 12" Subwoofer Box, SE12KT. And it was about $10 less than any around town. It took maybe 5-10 minutes to put togethor, and it was GREAT quality. Compared to what the local cheapo shops would have given me for more. Great terminals, and overall a good design. They get an A+ from me! The only down side was that the grill won't fit due to the huge surround around the screws for the sub, but she wants a RF P1 or P2 anyways, and I have heard that they can be removed. Anyways, for any of you putting subs in your girls' rides, I would highly reccomend getting this, quick, and cheap, and my lil cheap Pioneer never sounded so good.

Ok, now on to another topic. I guess more of a rant. I dropped her off at work, so I could drive the car and play around with it a little bit, and since I have no more bass. Well on Oxycotten, it was getting LOUD, and the caput, nothing. It was working all day. I knew exactly what happened when I smelled "that smell"!!! Well I get to her work a lil early to play, and the woofer is gone. The weird thing is, is besides pushing up and down is the only was to tell, the sub looks perfect, it was hot as hell when I pulled it out. Looked on the back sticker and noticed they were 150 Watts RMS and 600 Watts Max. Oops, I had been giving the pair in my truck 600 watts, and the single in her car 300 watts off of my JBL 600.1. I guess they just didn't like getting the TRUE 600 watts, and I guess they were ok in the truck, because I listen to mostly rock, and I had the gains set lower. So I threw in the other one, and turned the gains down, and hopefully it will be fine for a couple weeks till I can get her the RF she wants. I have never burnt a sub, besides some Adire Audio Shiva's, but the tinsel lead broke on those, they didn't "blow" so to say. And then I had 2 Type R's and they were begging for more power, but I got rid of the car, and there was no way they were gunna fit in the truck, so I sold em.

So what exactly happened, why did the magnet get so hot, and what makes that smell?? And is there anyway I can tear it apart and play with it???

Thanks guys, sorry for boring you!

Voice Coil + Excess heat = dead woofer.

IMO, if you haven't blown a woofer, you're not trying hard enough.

I'm sitting here looking at the DIY woofer box, and frankly... I'm impressed. It takes at least $35 in raw materials to build one, and this one is predrilled, pre-glued, beveled, the works. Sure, you won't be able to put a very big woofer in an unbraced 5/8 MDF enclosure, but it'd be fine for the Pioneers.

My point exactly. It will hold ANY subwoofer to meet HER needs, and I was impressed, I wanna blow the other one now!!!
