Unlocking password locked laptop?

My girls dad passed away and he had a Acer laptop. We are trying to figure out how to get around the password without taking it to a shop. So is there a program that will unlock it or are we SOL?

does it ask for a password before it boots or does it boot windows and then ask for a password?

it boots up, then right when you are about to be in windows it asks for the password.

turn computer on and tap f8 during bootup process, i dont know where it needs to be pressed exactly so i just keep tapping during post

cancel doesnt work. its either xp or vista, cant remember what they said was on it.

use a different computer to download cain & abel - then boot to safe mode and run caun n abel - im pretty sure it will give you the admin password
