Got a new amp. Interesting results. The shop put in a Audison SR - SR 4 to replace the Zapco They also cleaned up the install a bit, I like it a lot. You can see the progression as they tried to address the hissing noise First Install: First Service - Album on Imgur Second Install: Second Service - Album on Imgur Third and current Install: New Audison SR4 (Replaced Zapco ST-5X) - Album on Imgur Results: Hiss is present; however, it can now be made quieter and even eliminated (at listening position) by adjusting the gain on the Audison AMP. Adjusting the gain on my old Zapco did not affect the hiss level at all. With the Zapco, full counter clock gain had the same perceived hiss loudness as full clockwise. Today when I got my car back, the Audison SR4 was at full gain, so I heard the hiss. The noise level of the hiss was, I'd guess, 20-30% less than the Zapco. Though I have to consider, the shop made cable routing changes, and who knows what else, which could have improved things.
