I have an issue with my car stereo system that I am hoping you guys can help me diagnose. I have a 2001 Camaro and installed an aftermarket Sony stereo with speakers, amp, and sub. Around this time last year, my stereo started shorting out. It would turn off, as if the car was off and there was no power to the unit, and randomly turn back on. The problem grew worse, and I found that at times it would come back on if I bumped the dashboard with my hand. Sometimes when the unit was off, the windows would not roll down either. Eventually the display burned out on the unit, however it would still play sound when it wasn't cutting out and acting as if the car was off.
I thought since I could remedy the situation by hitting the unit, it must be a short inside the stereo and replacing it would fix the issue. Tonight I installed a new stereo, and it worked for the first several minutes, when to my dismay, the unit began shorting out and acting like it was off. It came back on with a bump, but spent most of the drive acting like it was off. My question for you is where to turn now in diagnosing this issue? Where could the loss of power be coming from?
Thanks for any and all help from a new user.
