Looking for people who work for charities or have been involved in charity events before. I'm currently working for a charity and helping set up a 5k fun run in accordance to my English Business Writing class. I'm trying to do a little research and it is my assignment to help promote the event online. (I'm not trying to do so here, as none of you are probably local)

Basically, what I'm looking for is:

-What did you do online that helped made your charity event successful? Be as specific as possible. I'm by no means a marketing major.

-Looking for alternative sources of online/technological promotion across campus besides email and the homepage

-Ways to reach the surrounding community via online

Much Thanks!

I raised 10 grand a few years back for Toys for Tots on a donation thing I started on another forum. Basically it was all handled throughout the single forum and then as people heard about it got posted on blogs and other sites related to the industry.

Me and my wife went out and bought all the toys ourselves and had TFT come to the house and pick them up.

It was fun but tiring and dumb me not really knowing much about running something non-profit so we never did it again as it was hard to find people to help other than donating money and just a royal PITA trying to get 501© status.

Hook up with your local running clubs/organizations. Have them help you get the word out. That'll be your best bet.

And are you doing everything yourself? If you are, there's a lot that goes into 5k's. I've run in quite a few horribly organized ones, but most are good. If you have never run them, find somebody who knows what they're doing to help you set it up.

Do you have links to the forum? (I'm assuming it was one dealing with charity/non profit stuff)

The non profit organization I'm working is already official and even state sponsored, so no worries there.

It's being done collectively as a class, but my main area of concentration is online publicity. I'll take all suggestions though being that the more I contribute to other groups, the better it makes me look //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Like I said, if you can get in touch with your local running group, then you will get all the runners who do 5ks each weekend. The local group in my area is http://sailfishstriders.com/

They have anywhere from 75-500 people at each race. I'm going to assume there's something like that in your area as well. Also, see if you can get the race advertised in the newspaper. They might do that charity type of thing for free.

Thank you SOOOO much. By far the most useful piece of information so far. I'm searching for running groups in all the cities local to mine, and I'm getting tons of information! Looks like most of them are more than glad to help sponsor a charity event.

Cool, good luck. Just make sure the course is marked well and you have an accurate timing system (two of my, and all other runners, pet peeves) and you should be fine.
