tipping an installer?

it went from me telling the owner everything i wanted...to me talking directly with the installer on all my visits/many phone calls. i was 50 under my overall budget for this system. i think i'll give it to him if i like how everything came out. if i see anywhere he might have cut corners or done a shoddy job, then i'll deduct from there. it's taking longer than they originally expected (at no extra cost to me) and i'm glad he's taking his time and doing a quality job. even though they need to move my car outta there and make room for new work. i'll let u guys know how it goes.p.s. i've worked many tip paying jobs, and can appreciate a good tip. however, if he happens to mention the tip one more time, that 50 is gonna be a 20, regardless of the work.

Good plan. Good man.

Im an installer as well as some of the guys in this thread. Rarely do you get a tip in this line of work. I have gotten some good tips before, up to $100. I got that for a big custom install in a Lexus IS300. That is the work I love to do, and this one involved significant fiberglass work. Regardless of the tip, this is the most gratifying work by far. These are the installs installers are proud of.

P.S. Only a jackass would ask for a tip. I hate to say it, but thats just not classy. It would be a very good gesture if you tipped him, but since he asked, id think twice.

If somebody does good work and everything comes out the way you like it .I would tip the person because it gives me satisfaction and the installer that he is apperciated and if something is wrong with your car and needs to get fixed you can take back to the same installer.

Please refer to the date before you post. Thank you, your friendly common sense advisor.

update, install is good overall. i'm happy. the installer was kool and i gave him the 50. however, i have a couple of issues.

it wasnt till i brought it home and broke out the measuring tape that i'd realized the box was way too small. too me, it looks like a prefab box made for 10s. its maximum cu ft is 2.1 not including displacements or the fact that side walls come in a bit. so right now, they are "supposedly" building me a new box. been 2 weeks now since i've had my car back...they are laggin on this rebuild. been buggin the shit out of the owner. should try contacting the dood who i tipped. maybe he can put some heat on....

Some shops won't allow you to tip the installers. I tried to tip an installer $20 for checking out my sub and putting a new one in and hooking it up. He told me that Tweeter doesn't allow their installers to be tipped. However, if I remember correctly, the installers get something like 30-40% of the install cost on top of the hourly rate, which might be why.

Tips. Blah......I don't give 'em. Call me an a-hole, I don't care. I'm paying your company for whatever I'm getting (services or goods, whatever). It's their job to pay you out of that, not mine (especially to have to pay the employee on top of paying for the goods/service).

Plus, if you are going to tip some people, you should tip everybody. Damnit, give me a tip when I give you loan. I'm enhancing your life...allowing you to purchase something you otherwise wouldn't have been able to, giving you access to instant money you otherwise didn't have. That's worthy of a tip! But do I get tipped? Nope. But the waitress who comes around once to fill your drink, and spends the rest of her time hiding in back (so you have to try to wave down any employee you can find when you need something) gets a tip.

Give me a loan and I'll give you a tip, hell if you can get me a loan you deserve a tip //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
