That could work if it wasn't for globalization. Societies are interdependent on each other more so now than ever before. On one hand it makes technology progress at an astonishing rate because of all the minds who work on a problem. On the other hand it also makes any problem affect everything else to some degree. Look at what happens when a large fluctuation in the US stock exchange occurs and what this does to foreign markets. Australia would be a good candidate for isolation if it did come down to a worldwide collapse, but the natural carrying capacity of the continent would still be taxed.
