The Yankees Are Nervous!
...posted by Matthew Cerrone...
As he has done every game since 1997, Mets LHP Billy Wagner entered yesterday’s baseball game to the song Enter Sandman by Metallica…
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Yankees RHP Mariano Rivera enters a baseball game to the same song. He’s been doing so since 1997, as well…
Having apparently lived in a bubble for the last ten years, seemingly ignorant of what happens in baseball in other cities prior to October, Yankees fans have been calling WFAN Radio claiming to be “insulted” by the revelation that another player, especially in “their city,” would “copy” Rivera. “It’s just disrespectful,” one caller explained…
Folks, it’s just a song. To me, however, this situation confirms that most Yankee fans are not irritatingly arrogant, but they’re also extremely nervous…
They’re arrogant because they’ve won a lot, but they’re nervous because they haven’t won in a while. The tide is turning, and they feel it. Only a baseball fan that is paranoid could get this worked up over music…
This is not the same group of cocky fans who dismissed the Mets a few years ago. Those fans would’ve laughed at Wagner and Shea Stadium playing ‘Rivera’s song.’ Now they are all bent out of shape, because along with losing championships the last five seasons, they’ve also lost a lot of their identity, in Tino Martinez, Paul O’Neill and Andy Petite, among others. Realizing another dominant pitcher does the same as their almighty Mariano is simply another dash of reality that it is no longer the year 2000…
The midday host for WFAN Radio in New York, Mike Francesa, is the definition of an arrogant Yankees fan. During this afternoon’s broadcast, Francesa had the following to say…
“I don’t care if Billy Wagner did it in Houston and did it in Philly. Nobody knew he did it. The Mets announcers didn’t know it. No one in the stadium knew this was his song. Nobody in America knew this was his song. I know he has a relationship with Metallica, but i don’t care if he grew up and he was in the band. When you come to this town you cannot co-opt something, now that you’re a Met sometimes you’re gonna have to do a little changing, because you’re coming to a town where a guy has turned that song into an event…Point is, at Yankee Stadium this is a huge deal, this is symbolic, it’s known around baseball that this is a big deal. You can’t co-opt it. It’s lame. Find something else.”…
Excuse me your Royal Heiness of Baseball, but why does Wagner have to change? Only an arrogrant, elitist fan, who is paranoid and lives in a bubble, would make such a silly suggestion…
“That was phenomenal,” David Wright told reporters of Wagner’s entrance. “Just to hear his intro music and hear that place go nuts, it sends chills down your spine. It's the ultimate high. It's hard to put into words how you feel when the crowd gets into it. You see him running into the game, it gets you all pumped up. It's fun to be a part of.”…
Exactly, David, it’s fun and that’s the bottom line. We, Mets fans, think it’s fun, and frankly I could care less how it is percieved in the Bronx. My fanship isn’t based on public relations. Francesa thinks it’s “lame.” Well, I think Francesa is lame for caring. He’ll argue that it’s a matter of originality. Okay, then I suggest Randy Johnson stop wearing No. 41, since Tom Seaver is a legend in this town and duplicating what someone else has done is just so “lame.” How do you suppose that will go over in the Bronx?…
The bottom line is that Yankees fans are worried, since the Mets suddenly matter again. The Mets are on the back pages in a positive way, they’re getting attention all across the country, the game’s top players are signing in Queens, tickets are being sold and the core of the team is all under the age of 30. If I were a Yankees fan I’d be jealous too, since it can’t be easy rooting year after year for an apathetic bunch of aging veterans while longing for the glory days of five years ago, all while knowing it will never happen again…
Get over it, Yankee fans, the 90’s are over, your irritating traditions are nothing but history and you’re about to be the second best team in New York, again. Relax. Just let it happen. It’s easier and more dignified that way. Stop whining and just let the new Sandman take you away…
