Are the $200 ones even worth getting?
The Behringer DEQ2496 + Behringer mic will run you about $350 if you buy new. About $200-250 if you buy used.

Behringer is a pro audio company....basically considered to be the "high end of the low end" in the PA world. But for the money, they'll do what you need.

I almost bought a DCX2496 but then I saw the DBX driveracks, $4500 is kinda steep though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

DBX Driverack PA can be picked up for $435+shipping from Full Compass. The Driverack PA has all the features of the Behringer DCX/DEQ combo (and a lil' more, IIRC) in one chassis. Only thing it doesn't have that the Behringer's do is digi input.....but not many people would actually use those anyways. I was actually looking at getting a DriverackPA back a year or so ago to mod to 12VDC and use in my car.

But yeah.....if you want a DBX setup like Mark Eldridge used to use.....that's some //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/greedy.gif.5a53e6246569d7ab79867170f3b06629.gif

I was talking about the 4800 to be specific. Gotta love the 8 in/outs and that sweet color screen to do some visual tweaking.

What exactly does the DEQ2496 do? is it used as an EQ or RTA or both?

In/outs depends on the unit and costs go up quickly for more. The Behringer has 4. To mod to 12v all you really need is to buy a power inverter thing, RadioShack has em for like $15.
Since the Behringer has 4, it'd be perfect to EQ/RTA a 2 way setup? How's the ease of use on it?

Yeah....if you wanna be a hillbilly //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Inverters can be noisy, not to mention they are illegal for use in competition (should you ever choose to go that route).

Modding them is *fairly* easy......pick up a cheap donor $40 amp, and tap into that amp's power supply to power the Behringer. Or, you can buy a prebuilt PS from someone like RobM on carsound. A little more expensive (~$100 IIRC), but probably a little safer and easier if you have no idea what in the hell you are doing //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
