it started from hackers owning people..

and then it went to p0wned and now simplified to pwnt.

People said "owned" in hacker circles before Half Life, Counterstrike, Tribes etc even existed.

Tribes was just the first time I recall seeing it. I wouldn't at all be surprised to hear that it's use goes back to DOOM LAN parties.
