The Hunt for 140db: Please give your opinions

Hey there guys!

Currently, I have installed in my 1997 Ford Expidition the following system:

JBL1200.1

(1) Infinity Perfect 12.1 (In a 1.5 sealed box)

Everything is wired up w/ 2g wires.

This is NOT enough... very little bass, I want this system to be LOUD *while maintaining SQ*.

Here is the deal:

I've had a 2nd Perfect 12.1 sitting around, new in the box all summer. I havn't got around to getting a new box built, so that I could install the 2nd woofer. (I better install it quick, cause the other Woofer is getting abused hard!)

CURRENT PLAN: Build a sealed duel chamber (1.5 ea) box, and install the 2nd woofer. I also have a 1.0 Farad Lightning Cap to install (got for free).

Will this give me 140db? I know I should be gaining 3db+3db from where I'm at now, but as I am new to car audio, is this a lot?

My neighbor has an escort, and (3) 12" subs (cant remember brand, pretty crappy) and he's got a so-so amp. He just scored 139.8db and he'll definatly be over 140db next time. This was his first comp, and his amps werent adjusted correctly. Obviously, i NEED to beat him! Could be tough with him having an extra woofer :) Hopefully my JBL1200.1 will be enough.

MY QUESTION: Do you think that the 2 perfects's Vs the 1 I have now will be enough for me, or should I sell the new woofer, and get an XXX / Brahma etc?

Maybe 2 cheaper 15's? I am totally lost here guys, and pretty frustrated. Easiest thing would be just to build a box and live with whatever I get.

Over the last 2-3 years, I have spent tons of money on stereo eqip, and have never had it installed in the same vehicle all at the same time.

I'm not looking to spend much more money, but I will if I think it will finaly "finish" my system.

Thanks alot in advance for your input guys,

-Barrett

Side Note: Currently running P5200 deck, however once I replace speakers I'll be installing a DEX-P1R I have here.

do the second sub and port the box. not for sure on the specs on your perfects, but do a box about 7^3ft and tuned to about 30-35 hz. that should get ya close to what/where u need.

140dB's isn't an extremely hard number to break, especially when you're using 1200w to drive the subs. IMO, you could probably do it with both subs in a 2-3cuft sealed box, and maintain a lot of your SQ.

The perfects are notorious for blowing when you put even slightly more than the suggested RMS to them, so if you're using that amp on just one, you'd better have the gains WAYYYY down or that sub is as good as toast.

Since you're new to car audio, let me be the first to tell you that SPL is all about the install. You'll have to try a lot of different things with your box and the position of your subs before you get the results you desire. Trial and error is a huge part of this hobby.

Along with cookin' a couple of subs along the way //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Kinda. Depends upon the subs really. But their are always going to be instances where that won't be true. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

just so everybody don't think i just threw them numbers (box size) up there, they came off WinISD beta.......i did raise the box tuning for a little more spl......WinISD says to tune at 21.3hz in a 7.8^3ft box.

anyway, i just wanted to justify my response............i'm out!
