"Narghile" is from the Persian word nārgil, or "coconut", and in Sanksrit nārikera, since the original nargile came from India and was made out of coconut shells.

"Hookah" itself stems from Arabic uqqa, meaning small box, pot, or jar. Both names refer to the original methods of constructing the smoke/water chamber part of the hookah.

"Narghile" is the name most commonly used in Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Greece and Israel, though the initial "n" is often dropped in Arabic. "Shisha" is more commonly seen in Egypt. In Iran it is called ghalyoun or ghalyan and in Pakistan it is referred to as huqqa.

Hookah's truely are FTW! My friends and I took one on spring break last year...it was the shiz. After a long day of snowboarding come back to the condo and chill around the hookah for a couple of hours:yumyum:

wow, i just noticed that this thread got bumped back up again, someone musta been digging deep...

anyway, scince i started this thread, weve got a six hose rotating hookah, and almost every flavor of fumari... good times.

BTW--- hoohak is good for hooking up with girls...

i had a friend in high school who's family was from syria, and they had a hookah at their house, which was cool as hell

the hookah bars are pretty cool, too, last year when i lived in kent, we'd hit up the hookah bar after the bars closed, cause it was a lot less creepy to ask a girl from the bar if she wanted to go chill and smoke a hookah than, well, anything else

the only downside to the hookah bars, is that they put those disposable mouthpieces on, which always leak, so you always get more air than anything else

i HATE cigerettes....but i do enjoy smoking sheesha (as opposed to hashish) out of a hookah. however in tampa of the 2 places in temple terrace that offer this, the best one is the cheapest one. it's a small arabian owned shop thats been there the longest and actually knows WTF they're doing when preparing the hookah and sheesha(sp?). all the other americanized places have the worst hookahs i have ever smoked. only arabs and jews know how to set those things up right, for real......
