First of all, it was the tower of Babel. Second of all, IIRC, it wasn't destroyed. God just made everyone speak different languages, so they wouldn't be able to communicate and build the tower. Why? Because the reason for the tower was blasphemy, because they wanted to build a tower that would reach into the heavens.

It's funny how atheists usually know more about the bible than christians...
