what really sux about all this shit is i REALLY REALLY love my type-r's.....
but all this bull shit is crazy.........

listen people: the type-r is a good sub. cheap, handles tons of power, gets loud as hell, and sounds good. is it the best sub in the world? hell, no. however, until you get into the $300+ range per driver, they are very difficult to beat.

are tcab boxes all they are hyped to be? lets think about this:

1. i generally build 3-5 custom enclosures a month. prices start at $125. until now, ive done local work, so i havent had to deal with any shipping, but its prob expensive to ship a big box. i know 6 years ago when we were doing virtual tech, it was. so price? a tad too high, but not exorbitantly.

2. performance: no doubt they perform. is it magic? hell no! i would encourage people to experiment. bracing has much to do with it. i know he keeps his tuning freak secret, but cmon, folks. try different tuning. i will say this from yesterdays experience with my type r 12s: mine like 40 hz better than they did 32 or lower. gained 4dbs, too. so, what i will do next weekend is go up 5 more hz and see how that affects my pressure, until i get it dialed in. its all vehicle dependent.

3. hype: this is where all the problem is... alot of people are tired of this because a) they have been around awhile and like their equipment, and b) they feel like tcab is using this forum as a business by continually talking about how much better their enclosures are than everyone elses.

realize, i dont have any problems with anyone here, but ive been around the block a few times and just take everything for what it is.

something for everyone to think about, as far as enclosure design is concerned:

outside of the mechanical orders of resistance placed on any driver, the first order of resistance is AIR. to a speaker, especially a subwoofer that moves alot, air is HEAVY. speaker manufacturers recommend a certain box size, and it is a trade off of performance vs. reliability. however, as long as you keep your vent area proportional to your box volume, youre pretty safe. so, you wanna build a hella loud box? ok, take your recommended specs for box size, double it, and plot out as much vent area as you can while still tuning low enough to sound good., then, and this is important, BRACE THE CORNBREAD HELL OUT OF IT! great boxes all have that in common, and thats where most people screw up, and loose alot of pressure.

thats not all there is to box design, but its a good rule of thumb that will make 99% of the world very happy. if interested, lemme know and i will post a tutorial covering all aspects of good enclosure design. it WILL take a little time, however.

not trying to sound like a know it all, because i dont know it all. but, it sux that more people have never had the chance to build their own box and enjoy the satisfaction of diy.

Apparantly I hold a trump card... My world finals box didn't have a single brace in it. A slim few boxes ever do use bracing, and when its in there.. its a waveguide, not to strengthen the box.

Talk is cheap... lets see some numbers. I didn't use bracing, so apparantly I had alot to go with my WF setup... just brace the cornbread hell out of a box and hit up a meca show... show me whats up.

well to start off... I never was bashing tcab or type r in this thread.. I never said I know why the enclosure was louder, it was all experimental. i never said i did a 151.7 in a grand am i said i was 1 db louder @ 40 hz.. At my shop during a final db drag of the year, for a radio station, during our grand re opening.. I do NOT have a video of this nor a digital cam... I do have 5 or 6 pics on a disposable kodak cam that i will put up as soon as i get them developed.. I did'nt expect 200 replys in 1/2 a day //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

First off, the type R's weren't available last year.

If you had done that great number, why was this thread ever started - http://forums.caraudio.com/vb/showthread.php?t=127856

Before the grand am, there was my 150.5 in my monte earlier this year with the one 15.. you would have known straight off the deal on the boxes, hell, you spanked that score without trying.

Dont mean to put down tcab enclosures but ... my results are pretty close to mark potts' results... There was a tcab box for a 99 grand am 2 door for a 15 type r and my enclosure i built off the speaker specs went to my garage and built a enclosure 1 db louder at 40 hz... i will post pics when i can,... i just want u all to realize with a lil work r's are nbot hard to make loud
You'll post pics when you can eh? I don't expect much from a disposable cam you havent developed in a year.

This post was worthless.

There would be results posted on the drag site, link.

please...

ask wayne harris who the first person he ever saw do 150's with 2 regular 10s, 8 years earlier than you did with 2 12s.... i dont have anything to prove anymore, i did it LEGAL in dbdrag before you were out of jr high school. im just trying to help people understand they can build their own boxes (which may be why your reply was so hostile).

...a "waveguide"...??? bwahahaaa. ok. since a 30 hz wave is almost 37 feet long, and 1/4 of that is around 9 feet, i would love to hear about how someone used that in a box for a vehicle in a car.... sorry, but arent you the guy that said the way to set your gains on your amp is to "blend in with the highs of your system" a couple days ago? so, you have no clue on how to properly set a gain on an amp, but youre going to talk about waveguides? whatever...

also, as far as bracing is concerned... youre full of shit. it may not be a common brace, but the enclosure is structurally braced, either by vent, double walls or baffles, or something. a screw into 2 adjacent sides is a brace, strictly speaking.
