i run a single 18" SX pushed off an RE 12.1 in my suburban and i ablsoluetly love it. . . 6.5 cu^ft slot ported and tuned to 34hz. . . ill just say its dumb to call this a mediocre sub.

I'd take an SX over a Type R anyday.

They are by no means mediocre. My 12 was one of the loudest single 12 setups (in a trunk) around here. I loved that sub just got stuck on SQ.

if you don't like the sx, you must be an sq perfectionist because the sx gets low and sounds good. not great, but good... IT ISN'T MEANT TO SOUND INCREDIBLE! It's meant to get loud daily! people need not bash it for purposes that is not intended to produce!!!

sx is a great LOUD daily sub, period... when powered properly, you'll never have any problems... unless you throw 2500rms at it daily like the R-types supposedly

As much as I hate the whole Type-R superiority complex... I would go with the Type-R over the SX.

a) It costs less..

b) Its capable of similar levels of output... (If not more..)

c) From what I've read, the R is also capable of better SQ (Even though that may be subjective..)

So I don't see why anyone would choose the SX over the Type-R really... unless you just like RE somewhere in your sig. A sub with similar performance that costs less is the logical choice here.

hmm other people are telling me the same but switched names...(minus cost..)
Well, the sx shipped is ~300, and 2 type r's shipped would be ~250 or something. I guess it would make sense though, because 2 type r 12's @ 1200 watts i'm guessing would have more output than 1 SX @ 1200 watts am i correct?

You want a quick review?

15" SX in a 4cuft 32Hz box in the trunk of my 1981 Buick Riviera. Really, really loud. It's way too loud for me and everyone, and I mean everyone whether they no shit about car audio or not thinks it's the loudest sub they've ever heard. Alot of people say it's SQ is "mediocre." My box is ported, which the first ported box I've heard extensivly, and I can't tell a difference in SQ between it and all the JL's in sealed boxs all my friends have. And then it's way louder.

All I have to say is that everyone thought the same way about the Hifonics Brutus back when it was popular.

Thats a different story because we had sort of a blind following with it. With the Type-R vs SX argument we have numbers and several different people with the same findings. Its much more convincing than praise alone for a product.

If someone were to come along tomorrow and bench the Hifonics Brutus against lets say a Fosgate amp with similar specs, and the tests showed the Brutus was better in that A/B... I would definately have respect for the Brutus, but that was never the case.

it juss flat out sucked for daily period, the power i threw at it, it didnt handle it, same box, same power the R sh*tted all on it and didnt wipe. i mean cmon, for the price, the R spanks the SX. which it does for daily. the results were wha they were, wha can we do about it. it juss plain beat it in every application. the SX handles the power for burps but for daily its not the sub. i'd put the single 15R setup against any 15SX setup anyday. and i bet the R comes out on top for daily. The SX IS LOUDER ABOVE 50HZ, but THE R does the same number below 45hz. which is better if u ask me.

Lemans, you know the story by now. Someone pitted an SX against the ever-so-loved Alpine Type R, the Type R posted an insignificantly higher number that wouldn't effect a daily driver in any way, now everyone thinks the SX is some mediocre half sub and not the little brother to the XXX like it really is.
After that certain people think "Gee, I have SXs already on the way! Defying all logic and the incredible number of good reviews - I will mentally list them in the '****' category of subwoofers!!". Not expecting much, they don't put the effort to do a decent install, so the SX ends up sounding like shit, and they post shady reviews.

Watch it happen again with the next forum boner against an otherwise loved sub here on ca.com.
You weren't there to hear the subs, obviously.

The type R was NOTICEABLY louder to the ear... why? Because it did the same number, but 6hz lower... it also had MUCH better extension and it also handled the power MUCH better. The R *is* a better daily driver.

The difference was even bigger in the 10" version...

And yea... its a hell of alot cheaper...

I DID choose type R's over SX's...

smart move apparantly, seeing as how I currently hold the MR1 and DB1 records in MECA...? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif
