Surround patching method

Alright, so I have an RE HC with a messed up surround... I bought it that way with the intention of reconing it. However, all that's wrong with it is the tear in the surround.... probably 5" long, right where the surround meets the cone. Reconing it seems like a waste of perfectly good soft parts! The previous owner tried using silicone, but the tear was simply too big, and it didn't hold. I heard somewhere around here about another patching method, which I have decided to try giving a whirl:

On the back of the surround, I laid down a layer of rubber cement, and pressed down some tissue paper on top of it. Then, I painted over it with more cement. I added a couple more layers, and I'm currently waiting for it to dry.

So far, though, looks like it ought to work well. The nice thing about rubber cement is it will stay flexible, so it shouldnt impede the movement of the surround. I'm not sure exactly how strong it will be... I figure a few layers of cement and tissue paper ought to hold. If it doesn't, no big deal... I'm reconing it to an 18 anyways //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Pics tomorrow night.... dad has the only cam in the house, and mine is back at the dorm. I'll make vids of me freeairing the sub to test the strength, though.

update:

just went and freeaired it at 40hz wih my X1.2000.1D

Started at 4 ohms, gave the sub all the juice the amp had, held fine.

Dropped it to 1 ohm, cranked it till it bottomed out... held fine
