Sunken ship fettish

i live about 5 min from the lake in cleveland.

lake erie has like some crazy **** like 5 -11 shipwrecks per square mile. is because the way the bottom of the lake is. you can walk out on the beach into the water, walk 30 feet and it will be 5 ft deep walk another 15 ft and its way over your head. but walk about 5 ft more and its waist high. its like thart all over the place in the erie. has alot of shipwrecks

I think it's cool that they created a reef habitat out of it, but I get that it would be sad for you. What kind of condition was it in? Was it in bad shape, or did they waste a perfectly functional ship?
I'd like to dive in the wreckage. I've been scuba diving before, but it was when I was younger. I didn't go too deep because there was a lot of pressure on my ears and it gave me a headache. Breathing underwater feels weird too, lol.
I think it was perfectly functional when we decommissioned it in 94-95, but I suppose it was just outdated or otherwise unnecessary by the time they decide sink it recently. Honestly, I'm not sure.
Random - You should watch the movie The Big Blue. It's a French film so it's a little different but based on this discussion I feel like you might enjoy it.

Interesting. There was a lake where I used to live that used to be a rock quarry. It was similar, where the depth changed suddenly. Could walk out 30 feet, and then there was a huge drop-off. It was great, because you could wade out into it and then cast into super deep water (was over 100 feet deep in the middle). Kinda made me nervous about catching something big when standing close to the edge though, lol

I don't get why the military sinks functioning ships. They could sell them with all the weapons taken off, right?

Alright, I'll add that to my list of movies to watch!

I myself have always been interested in shipwrecks. Not sure how long of a drive it is for you to the Cincinnati,OH area but there is an abandoned ship in a small creek there that has been in both world wars and even used by Thomas Edison at one point for experiments.
Queen City Discovery: The "Ghost Ship"

If you are there on the right day and the creek is low enough you can actually board the ship. I saw it with my son a couple years ago when we went to the Parts Express Midwest Audio Fest. Definitely worth the drive for me which was about 6 hours from home.
That's about 20 min from me. Where exactly is it

You would be shocked how many ships get sold for cheap cheap and either A. scraped or B. used for artificial reefs. I work in the marine industry and have seen several ex old military ships get stripped and then towed to sea to sink for reefs. One of the top of my head that came from where I'm at was called the oriskany (may have spelt it wrong).. Was an old aircraft carrier that they sunk off the coast of florida. Their were a bunch of minesweepers that were built I believe in the 80's and hardly used.. They were sold off for scrap and also a cpl for reefs..

I think it would be cool to buy an old military ship. Not a big one, but an old simple one you could operate by yourself.

I talked with my mom last night about some stuff. The plan was that we would sell our farmland/timber in Iowa and buy all the property around a lake in Minnesota. Then we'd have a private lake, and would have a small cabin built there. My mom was going to retire there, and eventually pass it down to me as a summer home.

Now we're thinking about buying a really small Island off the coast of Canada. It would be cool to get a decommissioned ship for travel to/from the mainland
