staining/glossing

so i stained my box today, i think its birch or maple, not sure. it went good and after that dried i applied 3 coats of polyurethane gloss to finish it up with a little more than an hour drying time between them. now to my question. i plan to do another coat of gloss tomorrow but can i sand it lightly with high grit sandpaper to get a smooth glossy finish or will that mess with the stain or gloss? im trying to get a piano like gloss finish or close to it. thanks.

Yes, you can sand it sand it with high grit sandpaper or a scotch pad between coats.

Scotchbrite or probably around 1000 grit. Can also sand the final coat and wax it. Just do a search on Yahoo or whatever for the proper steps...

Steel wool and wax work great for the final coat.

hmm i didt think about doing a final wax coat. what kind of wax are we talking about here?

i lightly sanded before the last coat of gloss with 180 grit but i think it turned out good for what it is. the wood could be in better shape and i didt know i would be staining it, so there is sandpaper scratches on it form the 60 grit.def, learned a lot from this and the next stained box will be perfect!

Looks good... Would have looked better if you rounded over the edges of the box though. Stained birch is sexy as hell!

thanks guy, i plan to switch out the red sued amp racks with stained wood as well to match. i def. would of rounded over the edges but i dont own a round-over bit sadly. would of helped with the look of the port for sure, but how it is there is no port noise what so ever //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

you should trim out the edges to cover the screws and joints. that'd look cherray
