SQ vs SPL

I have 2 L7's running 800 watts RMS each and they are enclosed in a sealed box. I have great sound quality but I want it to be louder. People say these subs were meant for ported boxes and the SPL is crazy when they are. If I did make myself a ported box will I end up loosing my SQ and having nothing but loud crap or will it just be louder with only a little less SQ. What is the difference in how they sound? I'm just curious.

from my findings the sq goes down alot but it also depends on tuning of the ported box and its size. again big ported sound better than small ported. i woulnt ever cal a solobaric a small box woofer ever.

I can tell you from personal experience that putting the sub in a ported box correctly tuned, will make it ALOT louder. I had one L7 and put it in a 3 cu ft enclosure tuned to 37hz and it was pretty loud. Sacrificed ALOT of SQ though. I'm getting rid of it for that reason, so choose wisely!

If you do go ported, be careful with your gains, especially if you dont have a SSF. You may want to turn your gains down to give it 600 watts if you dont have the SSF.

Sub Sonic Filter. It filters out frequencys below a certain point.

You normally need it when running a ported box and many good amps have it built in.

If you go ported you will loose the SQ aspect. But those kickers are crying for a ported box. Trust me the SPL will outrule the SQ side and you will never go back. Well at least untill you try XBL^2.

Thanks a lot for the help. SO say I did make a ported box 2.5 cubic feet at the correct hz, what's the difference in how it is going to sound? I can't really think of how it's going to sound different (loss in SQ) because isn't the sound just a really low deep hitting force? I can see how it sounds different, can someone explain. I've never heard a ported box before so I wouldn't exactly know.

Just build a ported box and slap those b|tches in there, I doubt you could hurt them playing in a ported box for a day at that power.
