Spl!!! Vs sq!!! The differeance.

SO I WAS LOOKING AT A FEW SUBS AND STUFF YESTERDAY AND I WANTED TO PRETTY MUCH GET ACROSS THE SQ SUB VS A SPL SUB POINT, ALSO WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A UNDERHUNG VOIL COIL VS A OVERHUNG VOICE COIL.. I KNOW THAT MOST SUBS ARE UNDERHUNG COILS AND THAT MEANS U CAN SEE THE VOICE COIL JUST BY LOOKING INTO THE GAP THROUGH THE BASKET, I KNOW A OVERHUNG COIL, IF YOU LOOK INTO THE SUB U CANT SEE THE VOICE COIL AND I KNOW THAT IF YOU PLAY A (( OVERHUNG VOICE COIL )) SPEAKER I KNOW THAT THE COIL STAYS PRETTY MUCH HIDDEN WHEN IT PLAYS, MY OLD re audio xxx 12 is a extreamly good sounding sub FOR WHAT IT IS , i had 2 xxx 12s and i switch them out for another pair of 12s. i must say FOR A SQ SUB Them 05s XXX did work!!!! its seems to me on a sq sub theres only 1 or 2 spiders and i think sq subs , they may not handel as much power and i know they are made to play ANYTHING VS A SPL WOOFER that seems kind of peaky. a sundown ZV4 vs 05 xxx . the zv4 subs will want to naturlly play and have a lower bass sound and they have almost a muddy sound on the higher notes. like if you tune a zv4 to 28htz, it will want to play the lower bass and peak there. i did the same with my xxx and it seemed to not be as ((PEAKY) it played a low low bass (30 hertz )) like a ALL I BLOW IS LOUD FROM JUICY JAY or it also dosent mind my girl driving down the road playing a extreamly high dubstep bass with basslines that are 40htz and up. ive always tuned my boxes lower than 35 hertz, and some subs like the zv4, to be completly honest , they like the 28-35 hertz bass and that prettty much it, ive tryed them inside a prefab box tuned to 41 hertz, and that was the only box i could make them play notes that were above 40 that sounded good im not saying they didnt play it loud ,im saying it in terms of audioble ness. ex if u play young jeezy put on. in a box tuned low ( 28 ) ,the zv4 will catch the lower one by far the best, my xxx played the notes evenly and JUST as loud on the lower notes, sq subs dont seem to be as picky to boxes, i mean the box is 99.9% of the build. ive always enjoyed the high dollar SQ subs , im not so fond of the big chunky surrounds and all the high excursion stuff. ive always like subs like, 2005 r.e audio xxx series, FI n3 series, DD Z , incrimanator JUDGE series, warden . ive had my hands on TONS of subs, sq subs and spl subs, i havent worked with every single sub out there, and theres a difference between hearing a speaker and then like messing with it by putting in inside different boxes and stuff, to be completly honest with no BS, if you build a box for 2 sundown zv3 15s or a pair of regular pair of alpine typr rs , or just any pretty much average sub, you can get them bumpin pretty good, just as loud as a sub that rated 50 billion watts. also it seems to me that just because the speaker is bigger dosent mean itll be louder either. it does but it dosent , if you put 2 18s inside a chevy cobalt trunk and u switch them out for a truck pair of solid 12s , the 12s will be louder.

im not a professional but i have seen and delt with most of the mainstream subs, like the sa and xfls and type rs and what not, but for the past year and a half ive wanted to work with subs that actuly have though put into them, 2005 RE AUDIO XXX series, FI N3, or any subs that exotic. the thing that pisses me off is how many people try and burn people on them, if you see a pair of type rs on sale , thell be like perfect, u find a pair of xxx , the dude will say there perfect but one will be a 2ohm and the other will be 4ohm and itll have coil rub or something stupid, i found a n3 15 and they guy wanted 200 for it, looked at it and one of the coils didnt work so i didnt buy it.. every single sub ive ever sold to somebody, ive handed them a 9volt battery to check to see if the coils works, a flash light to see if the coils burned , and ive helped them check out the sub, i dont want to be known as the dude who flips junk blown subs, i wanna be the dude who has the other dude saying (( yea i got this sub 4 years ago and it still works, i play it evryday)) people ask me (( is the sub underrated or overrated)) i tell them the truth. if i reconed the sub, ill tell them (( yea i reconed this sub)) or (( yea man its got a cracked basket thats why im selling it cheaper)) ive always been honest with subs, ive been burned a few times and the people who burn others, there to poor to be able to fix it OR all they have IS THAT PAIR OF SUBS OR AMPS, and if a dude has a pair of 18s and the ones blown, hell say its fine because hes to poor to fix it, to be completly honest i always usaly make friends with the people who i sell subs to , i sold my friend a pair of americanbass xfl 12 6 years ago, i told him the one had a smashed in dustcap.. to this day he still bumps them,i sold my friend a pair of typrs and i toldem that when i was scrweing it in i went through the surround, he still came over and bought it, i put a little glue on it, he has them still to this day lol. i dont believe in ripping people off , thats the one thing i dont do, i dont sell blown subs, blown amps, i wont sell a amp that one channel works, i dont do that and never will

I'll give you just a very brief over view... SQ subs typically don't take as much power or get as loud due to that reason and various other reasons, but they can still get very loud in the right build. True SPL subs are more geared towards burping and take massive amounts of power, but don't sound that well. A lot of subs are in between, classified as SQL. That Sundown Zv4 you mentioned can play the higher notes well if the box is right, but it also has what they call an SPL surround which helps it destroy the low notes. A sub like the Zv3 you mentioned will do quite well on the lows and higher notes as long as it is in a good box.

Also, if you have a proper box for your setup, sub size is king when it comes to getting loud due to cone area. Now obviously power contributes greatly to this as well as the specific vehicle. So yes, two 12s in a proper box will destroy 2 18s in a cramped, **** box.

I have 2 SA-12s tuned to 32 Hz and they play 40-50 Hz great, as well as killing it at 26-28 Hz. Like I said before, the SPL surround helps it to dig low because it allows for more linear extension (CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG HERE. I KNOW WHAT IM TRYING TO SAY, BUT I CANT THINK OF THE RIGHT WAY TO WORD IT)

yea i have a zv3 18 right now but the coil winding broke on it but it still works fine, FOR A 18 INCH SUB it had BEASTTT!!!!!! sound quality, and yea i did notcie that also, the spl subs hold much more power, i must say i never was a fan of the sa subs, but u can get them pretty loud for what those thing are, my friend used to have a pair but he busted up the one, and yea ma right around 40 herts those sa subs really LOVE IT, they still play around 30 herts ok. the sa 15s, i must say a a very good 15, there almost on pair with a xfl series from americanbass, the only thing that scares me about the SA is those coils, but yet again 2.5 inch coils, you can get around 700-800 rms out them for a while. my faviort series from SUNDOWN is the ZV3 and the nightshade series, and i wouldnt mind finding a pair of TEAM subs, but the problem is everybody trys to burn somebody on those. like the sub will work, but after you push 2500 rms, ull notcie itll have coil rub, and also they want HELLA loot for them, or anyteam sub. its EASY AS HELL TO BURN SOMEBODY, i mean you meet them inside a parking lot, u show them the sub, u push on the cone, look at the coil and say (( see its good)) when u take it home or what not , put power to it ,ull find out somethings wrong. one coil reads different. people pay 600 bucks for a sundown audio zv4 15, they run it,blow it up, and instead of paying 180 bucks for a brandnew recone, they just sell it and burn somebody because they think the subs not worth it or something, i cant tell you how many times i see people try doing that. my xxx is all origanl, its not MINE anymore because i gave it to my friend for a snowmobile, but its still sitting inside my closet , and i must say i love the 2005 re audio xxx series subs.

n3 series and my xxx from re are both better. my xxx had i mean almost ungodly amout of motor force. thing about it was how much power you could put to it also, but yet again , loud off a 840 watt pioneer amp lol but yet again i know a n3 is better than my old xxx.

First of all, you have overhung and underhung BACKWARDS. Underhung is when you can't see it, overhung is where it sticks out of the gap. I can't believe nobody else corrected you on this.

Also, the DDZ can be classified as a SPL and SQ sub by its T/S parameters. The high motor force and light moving mass is ideal for both. You would use a different enclosure to achieve each goal though. SPL box would be peaky up high, and SQ box would need to be flat with a large bandwidth.

Have you owned an N3?
