If you are set on Rainbows I'd talk to Don (6spdcoupe) or 3.5max to see what they think about the different levels Rainbow has to offer. As far as your "theory" on amps, well I'm sorry to say I'm about to disprove the theory(well sort of, if you were going active but we aren't talking about active you are asking about passive) You see, with components you are able to run both the tweeter and mid, both left and right, with just a 2 channel amplifier. Now the only reason you would need a 4 channel amp was if you wanted to run either two component sets, a front comp set and a rear set, or you are going Active. I wouldn't worry to much about Active or Passive right now. If you are just now getting into the hobby, stick to buying components and entry level head units. I'm not saying go out and buy junk(of course you are looking at rainbows so obviously you are doing some research) but I wouldn't focus so much upon that unless you plan on upgrading in the near future. If you must know what the two are however, there are wonderful write ups on the subject. Also I would worry about your front stage before worrying about the sub-stage. If I could do it over again, I'd pick a better front stage, dampen it, tend to it, and have proper amplification before worrying about my sub-stage.
