so hot, about to "Xplod"

Hey guys. Gotta Sony Xplod "1000 watt" garbage amp the other day to power my 2 12" image dynamics subs. I know this is basically junk, and it doesn't put out any real kinda power. I'm a very impatient man, and instead of saving for the memphis setup I want, I went and threw a couple bucks on something to "get me by" for now. Problem is that the amp keeps overheating and cutting out after about 15-20 minutes of play. Wiring is good and tight, nothing touching, gain is about a quarter way up, bass boost and loud settings are at minimum, and I have a 4 gauge wire powering it. What is the deal? The subs are 1000 rms each. Is the reason it's overheating because it's trying to power something that needs more wattage? I used to have a Visonik 1802A (also junk), and it was able to push the subs a lot better. Took about 6 months to kill that amp, but she finally went bye bye. Other than purchasing a better amp (I promise, I started saving for one today!), any suggestions on what might be wrong, or give me a temporary remedy for this problem until I can upgrade? I gotta have some bass!!!!!!!!!!!!

Them subs is power-hungry.

Like 01limited said - what impedance is the amplifier seeing? That could be a big issue if its at 1 ohm, those POS amps would probably overheat real fast.

Not sure. I studied up on the whole ohms, wattages and specifics awhile back, but forgot everything. The subs are dual 2ohm voice coils. The amp is two channels, so I have right positive on speaks to right positive on amp, same with the left side, so I think they're wired correctly, unless I have to change up the wiring on the voice coils.

what you just described is really hard to understand.

you should go to rockford fosgates wiring wizard (google it) and choose 2 dual 2 ohm subs options and it will show you all the ways you can wire it up

You could possibly have it wired to .5 ohm which is way to low for that amp. I would keep it at a final 2 ohm load

Well there's your problem. A 2 channel Xplode isn't going to run bridged at 2 ohms for very long. If you have dual 2s you probably have them wired at 4 and then parallel for a final load of 2 ohm. Try running them at 4 ohms 2 each channel. They're not going to be seeing much power but at least the amp won't shut down on you.

Final two ohm load. Got it. Months ago I went on Crutchfield's and checked out their wiring diagrams, ripped the subs outta the box, and made sure the voice coils were wired correctly. What I meant in the post was, I wired each sub to each channel, pos to pos and neg to neg.

I admit I am a beginner (just installed my first system last summer for my sis in law--no problems yet, but that was a mono amp with one dvc sub), and I try not to follow the crowd on good and bad amps, but when my first experience with the Xplod is like this, can't help thinkin' they're right. Then again, if what you say is true about the possibility of the amp seeing too low of an ohm load, then I gotta chalk it up to ignorance. Back to the drawing board
