I just wanted people to know a little info about APO mailing. Our Soldiers and Civilians working for the Military overseas have official US Postal Addresses called APO or FPO addresses just like people in CONUS. People at APO/FPO addresses have a lot of problems with purchases made online because the shippers usually do not understand how simple the process is. The most difficult part of mailing to an APO or FPO is just getting to the Post office to send the item. The sender will need to fill out a customs form to list the items being shipped to ensure no dangerous goods are being mailed. DO NOT USE UPS!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif
Cost :
The cost is just like sending to NY. The US Government has a facility that receives the items and then they are put on military flights to take them to their final destination at no additional cost to the shipper or seller.
One problem that most people encounter is the confusion between UPS and US Postal. UPS will not deliver to an APO or FPO because they need a physical address to deliver to. Since Soldiers and Civilians do not officially live overseas they normally do not have a registered physical address (See the problem with UPS now) causing a conflict.
Addressing an APO or FPO:
When addressing the item keep it simple. The persons UNIT or CMR , then the Box Number (CMR is Consolidated Mail Room) is the first line under the name of receiver. The Next line is APO or FPO then the land area designator like AE (Army Europe) then the zip code. So as an example;
Joe Jones
CMR 114, Box 001
APO AE 09021
There is no need to add United States at the bottom of the address because it is an official US Address. DO NOT USE UPS!
Payments:
People that USE Paypal also have no problems because Paypal also supports the overseas service members and does have confirmed APO/FPO addresses.
I hope that this may help someone in the future and make people feel a little more comfortable with dealing with APO/FPO customers.
Did I mention, DO NOT USE UPS!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif
