Seriously I am a super noob and have questions. neways what is "SPL?"

I drive a Subaru WRX sedan with stock speakers matched up to kenwood excelon headunit. I had an infinity basslink but recently sold it because i am looking for harder hitting bass. i am looking to spend just under $300 for a used subwoofer system setup that will "knock/slap/hit" (whatever you want to call it) hard. i listen mostly to hip hop, rap, and trance type music. any suggestions on the type of setup i should get? heres a list of noob questions i know you audio guys can answer with ease.

please dont flame me and tell me to search the forums, i have tried that and havent found a tutorial type section. most of the posts are just about comparing things like 1 jl w3 vs 2 jl 10w0's or something like that. BIG THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!

1. what's the difference between sealed and ported box?

2. what do the terms spl and sq mean?

3. whats the difference between 2 and 4 ohms and what are its effects?

4. in general, would 2 10's be able to hit harder than 1 12?

5. for instance, if had 2 subs each with 250watt rattings, what amp would i need to adeqatlely power those subs?

once again big thanks for anyone who can help me in this new world of audio //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

SEARCH .....................

but in short

1-Sealed is exactly that a sealed exclosure and ported which is alot larger and is vented - which makes for louder bass while sealed is not as loud but alot more accurate - - - PORTED box for SPL Sealed box for SQ

2-SQ=Sound Quality SPL=SoundPressureLoud

3- no sound difference's mainly created for different wiring applications and for different amp's

4- no,and yes too many variables, very grey area

5- depends on MFG,but usually RMS rating is a close number of what power a sub is looking to recieve - I prefer to always feed a sub more than the RMS for some what we call Headroom,or a little extra in the bank

as far as the original post: bcae1.com will get You started. Literally read the whole site (or as much of it as is online these days), it wont take You too long, and if You take the time to comprehend it, You'll be LEAPS ahead of the majority of this forum.

Another good read is the "Car Stereo Cookbook" & "Loudspeaker Design" By Vance Dickason. Save Loudspeaker design for later as it is rather in depth for You to start with.

Hmm... I'd heard that ported was actually able to be *more* accurate if you bother to properly tune the ports. Like around 22hz or something? Could someone further clarify the pros/cons between the sealed and ported?

I'm not a bass monkey, I am definitely looking for SQ for listening to stuff like Jesse Cook, Miles Davis, Infected Mushroom, Shpongle, Björk, Paul Oakenfold, etc. So which would be better suited to delivering the SQ needed for complex music: sealed or a well made, tuned and ported box? Trunk space is not really an issue.

ng a noob? I just figured he was born a 12v god.......lol
lol...

I read that entire site before it was at the current URL...it used to be hosted on a different server. Also, before it had the nice tabs/scroll list on the side...and before the search function //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
