Ok So I'm sick and I cant sleep and this is bothering me, mainly cause my good friend, his gf and I were discussing this earlier.

Is it:

I'm going to turn on the air conditioner?

-or-

I'm going to turn on the air conditioning?

I'm pretty sure the top one is correct but is the bottom one also correct?

Right I see that but

-ing | Define -ing at Dictionary.com

So condition can be both a noun and a verb like your are conditioning the room (with air) so if you add -ing then does that make it a noun and let you do the 2nd sentence?

Actually side thought, isnt "on the air conditioning" a prepositional phrase? and the base sentance actually "I'm going(verb)", "to turn" also being a prepositional phrase.

Yes I know what a preposition is, I'm just curious if its grammatically wrong to say "I'm going to turn on the air conditioning?"

Both are correct.

It's the same as saying, "I am going to activate the system that conditions the air."

It is not wrong. I have always excelled in grammar. Most instructors would rather the student be careful not to have allot of prepositional phrases. That makes writing a bit more challenging.
