The PCX2200 is a full range, two-channel amplifier with a built- in variable 12dB-per-octave HP/LP crossover that ranges from 30-4 kHz. This amp also features an independent line output crossover with the same specs, a fully regulated PWM power supply, temperature-controlled, forced air cooling, and a remote bass boost control. Power ratings are listed as 2 x 200 watts at 4 ohms, 2 x 400 watts at 2 ohms, or 1 x 800 watts at 4 ohms, mono.
Bench Test
I’ve been involved with the car audio business for over 25 years. As the industry was evolving, and the equipment kept getting more and more technically sophisticated, I’ve tried to keep my test bench up to date. I would purchase bigger power supplies, newer AM Stereo/FM Stereo Analyzers, Power Amplifier Analyzers, Waveform Analyzers, and even Databus Simulators, trying to keep up with the technology. Nevertheless, performance testing these near kilowatt and above amplifiers has shown me that it’s time for another upgrade.
After replacing a blown fuse on my test bench, I was able to squeeze out a few power ratings for you people. The PCX2200 easily surpassed its 4-ohm stereo rating with 240 watts-per-channel at 12 volts, and only dropping to 230 watts-per-channel at 10.5 volts without any clipping. The 2-ohm stereo and 4-ohm mono test matched the manufacturer’s listed rating of 400 watts/channel and 800 watts mono at 12 volts. Whew! I think its time to put this baby in my car before my test bench goes up in smoke!
Installation
Installation would be a breeze. I loved the PowerLock quick disconnects the PCX2200 uses for power and speaker/remote connections. It’s a lot easier than standing on your head with a short screwdriver and mirror to make your connections. (Believe me, I’ve done this!) Once you’ve run your wires and mounted the amp, everything just plugs in. The included remote bass boost control (QBASS PLUS) will supersede the amp-mounted control if you wish to install it. The QBASS PLUS control can boost one of four selectable frequency centers. (30 Hz, 36 Hz, 44 Hz, and 60 Hz.) A switch (HP/LP/FULL) and a frequency control adjust the internal crossovers. The control is labeled 30-4K. To figure out your setting, you count the number of detents felt while turning the control and then refer to a chart in the owner’s manual. Kind of a pain, but how many amps do you know of that have 41 crossover frequency settings?
I have to mention the smooth eloquent finish of the PCX2200. This is made possible by putting the heat sink fins on the inside of the amp. This makes sense being that the fan is pulling air through the interior of the amp anyway.
User Evaluation
Finally, it’s time for the real life test. First, I decided to test the PCX2200’s full power on a subwoofer rated at 1000 watts, RMS, and mounted in a really small enclosure. The PCX2200 pounded this 12-inch sub effortlessly. After about fifteen minutes of listening to music tracks at volume levels that brought out my neighbors, the thermally-controlled fan kicked in. Being very pleased with its performance as a sub amp, I switched it over to my front-end speakers. Reproductions of sound quality tracks were very accurate and transparent. There was not any audible turn on or off noise. The engineers at PrecisionPower have designed another winner! I cannot imagine anyone being anything other than proud to own one of these competition class amplifiers.
