Satellite radio antenna

I have an alpine head unit. I am looking to purchase the XM radio adapter and I know there is a special antenna that mounts on the roof. Is there any other place I can mount this while still getting good enough reception? I know I could mount it anywhere but does anyone have any experience with finding the best location for reception that isnt the roof?
