Rounding Edges?

I've been working on a new box recently. A friend of the family has been helping me. He's helped me out a lot, I would've never got it done without his help.

We cut the wood last week and started putting it together Friday. We put the two sides on and put the port together outside the box. Then today, he finished the box while I was at school, we just have to cut the circle.

He rounded all the edges on the outside of the box because he said that's the only way it would be square. Is it necessary to round the outside edges of it? I'm not complaining at all, it looks DAMN good, but my dad said it took him over 4 hours using a sander to get it done. I just hate that he spent all that time on it. I know this would've been easier with a router, but I don't have one, right now at least. So is it really necessary to round all the corners with either a router or a sander or would it have been ok to just put the pieces together the way they were cut?

If the cuts are square than it shouldnt be necessary to round the edges. Depending on what it will be covered with it is sometimes nicer to have the corners rounded. But on a router table that only takes a couple of minutes.

I'm fairly sure they were all square...maybe one of them was a bit off or something. It looks really good like it is though, I just hate that he spent all that time on it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif. I might build one tuned a little higher sometime in the next month, for a local comp. I'll probably just leave the edges on it though. 4+ hours with a sander doesn't sound too fun.

i miss my router w/ all my bits...

i recently had to round the edges of a box w/ a sander. wasn't as fun as it was w/ the router and a 1/4" roundover bit.
