The amp you have shouldn't be too much for those subs and if the gain is only like half then you shouldn't be putting too much clipping into the coils so you likely are just breaking in the subs. The suspension is stiff when it's new. A couple hours of playing it at a medium volume will help to loosen them up.

And yes if it's in a ported box, and you are tuned at say 30hz, but you are playing it loud at 25hz without having the subsonic filter adjusted properly you can damage the subs. Be careful. The subs will become "unloaded" when you go very far below tuning frequency, which allows them to move freely (like they aren't even if a box, or in a box with a big hole in it) and the suspension can get damaged.

 
those 1500's are power houses especially if u remove D103 and D106 it removes thermal protect and low impedence protect. u can wire them down to .25 but i would only do it for burps. i was told by an old competitor that they saw 67V out of one by doing this.
