Yesterday a young kid came into my shop complaining that his subs won't make any sounds, he had recently bought a JVC 310 cd player and a pair of Kenwood 10's in a ported box for his Ford ranger extended cab. I offerd to go outside and have a look at it for him to see if I could correct the problem, apon inspection I find and old Rockford 200watt monoblock running the subs with the factory speakers run off the Jvc deck. The amp was installed by the kids friend using spare scraps of 10 gauge wire and an old grey colored RCA cable that had been cut and fixed using cheap butt connectors (major ghetto install).
Heres where the hell comes in-
The kids friends pull up and immediatly start blaming me for problem saying that I have sold him "junk" equipment and that I better fix it, they say that we wired the subs wrong in the box and that the Jvc decks pre outs are dead.
The problem-
The subs just move slightly in and out without making any sound while the rest of the system plays normally, my first thought is that the amp is putting out a straight DC signal probably caused by a short in the crappy RCA cables or the amp is damaged.
Troubleshooting-
I take the box out of the truck and hook it up to one of the amps on the demo board to show that the subs are indeed wired correctly in the box, sure enough they sound fine, the kids immediatly start blaming the deck as the problem and I respond by saying that it is rare for the preouts to be dead on a brand new deck and suggest that the hacked RCA cables be replaced and possibly the amp. This is where they get mad swearing up and down that the amp is the best amp ever and that the RCA's are just fine demanding that I replace their friends cd player with a better model, I respond by offering to test the CD player to see if the pre outs are ok and go outside to remove the deck from the truck which causes more problems because the deck cannot be removed without taking the dash apart because of the way the kids friend installed it, so I tell the kid to go home take out the deck and bring it back so I can test it, as I don't have the tools or the time to remove it myself. At this point his friends start laughing at me making references to how stupid I am because I can't remove the deck. I walk back into the store shaking my head.
RAGE-
In any other situation I wound have broke those stupid little bastards arms and legs, pissed on their faces and object ***** their mothers with a chainsaw. There is nothing worse than young kid coming into the store thinking that he knows more about car audio than you do and that your sole purpose in life is to steal his money and give him junk in return. I strive everyday to give better customer service and better prices then our competitors and this crap just pisses me off.
Sorry if thats longwinded, I needed to blow off some steam.
