Radio reception..HU or adapter?

I'm working with a pioneer premier 470 here, used to have it in my car but then put it in my dad's car(2000 jetta). The radio reception seems decent, but on a main AM station (810 in the bay area) the reception is pretty bad. I pulled out the deck and turned it on and listened too to make sure the anteanna adapter wasn't falling out when the deck as fully pushed into place, and same thing. When I had that deck in my car, 98 accord, I noticed the FM radio had very noticably bad reception, so I'm thinking it's the HU? Now I have an alpine 9835 in my car and the reception is pretty good. The pioneer 470 also supposedly has that super tuner feature...Anyways I'm thinking about just going down to the shop where I bought both the deck and the anteanna adapter for the jetta and tell them that I'm having a problem with reception and it's either the deck or the anteanna (since I bought both from them and still have warranty on the deck). Any opinions/suggestions?
