doubtful. i bet someone comes out with an adapter though. where you can plug ur psp into your tv. but not a seperate player.

well i mean you would think it's going to be the new generation. kinda like how tape replaced vinyl, dvd replaced vhs, now the time has come for umd to replace dvd? possibly.

I seriously doubt they'd ever be a universal player - hence the uproar over DeCSS and the MPAA a few years back. Region encoding is too good of a marketing scam (I mean strategy) for filling the pockets of Sony and their ilk.

id ont see how sony is going to get that much money from it in the first place. i was talking to my coworker the other day he was saying that sony is going to make the UMD's unrestriced. so anyone can make one you know? plus i mean think about it? a minidisk. it's GREAT. saves space. right now im watching a movie and im at work.

what exactly is DeCSS and MPAA?

CSS is the encryption scheme used for region-coding DVDs, so you can't play them on an unrestricted player (such as freeware meant for Linux). deCSS was a program (really just a few hundred lines of code, actually) that circumvented this. Under the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) the mere publication of that code is a crime...so of course, it spread everywhere.

The MPAA is the Motion Picture Association of America. The deCSS case was the precursor to the whole RIAA thing...which is why I wasn't surprised at all when that happened //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Especially after P2P caught them off guard, I'd be really, really surprised if they made the same mistake twice.

umd disc will never be used for anything except the psp. its for security reasons although the psp has already been cracked. but no there will never be a stand alone umd player or recorder
