Id go to a competent undergrad school (well... I did that) then go to the best grad program you can afford...
its not just the security it offers, but you've got to take into account the hapiness itll help with...
the better school will not gurauntee better pay (but it might get it for you) but it will probably give you more choices as far as specific jobs/locations/etc...
Im looking @ going to the Chicago school of sociology, arguably the best in the country, and also very expensive...
Ill never make big money in my field... but if Im a graduate of this specific program, Id almost be able to pick and choose my employer
