Pre-Out Voltages of Popular HU's.......

Here is a list of pre-out voltages of popular head units. It also shows the pairs of pre-outs. This list was gathered from info on the HU's website. It does not include all models(if I didnt know it, I didnt post it) so if it is not on this list and you know the FACTUAL voltages of certain HU's, please post it here and it will be added to the list. Please be positive if you list a HU. This list also does not include flipouts and DD's. Again, If you know it, post it. I know there are many more so all input will be appreciated.

Is there really that big of a difference between a 4 volt and a 6 volt when it comes to sound qauility??

IMO, i have noticed BIG differences when going from 2 - 4v but 4 - 6v. I couldn't tell. IMO 4v and over is all you need

Pre-amp output voltage can be misleading. I have an Alpine CDA-7892 that has 4V outputs, but the resistance on those leads is incredibly high so their actual output ends up being really low. I must have the gains on my amp turned all the way up just to get a moderate sound level output from my system. Manufacturers should list the impedence as well as voltage for pre-amp outs.

I don't know if this will help anybody, but my older Kenwood KDC-MP5028 has two sets of pre-outs that are 4 volt.

Alpine CDA-7941 (see sig) is listed in the manual as 3x(F/R/S) 5v max.

CDA-7940 is listed in the manual as 3x 4v max.

X2 - my gains had to be past 1/2 way point for any decent volume :-(

The higher impedances associated with the RCA outputs assist with noise rejection and some Eclipse and Pioneer HU's have the reputation of having higher noise floors despite what the specifications say.

As long as your amps are optimized to the head unit's output voltage who gives a crap that the gains have to be turned up a little higher. I have never had problems with noise or output on Alpine head units and I have been using them since 1978.

In all my time of competing in IASCA in the mid 90's I sure did not see very many winning vehicles that sported Pioneer or Eclipse head units. Most were Alpine's with the 7909 being the HU of choice so that alone should tell you something. I guess noise doesn't matter these days since it is all about SPL these days. They do.

It's generally found in the manual rather than being published in the publicated specs (what percentage of the buying public or your average Best Buy salesman would know whatit meant, anyway???).

If it is of any great importance to you look up the manual on the manufacturer's site before buying...

My JVC KD-G820 is a bit of an oddball I think. Front and rear channels are 4 volt and sub is 2 volt.
