Never seen this series of amps before. Are they any good?

Specifically the 500iQX.

Someone is selling this locally for 100 bucks.

Does anyone know what the specs for this amp are. And how much is it actually worth.

thanks

IIRC, that was the PPI budget line when PPI was making the Art Series! The quality of it is similar to the RF Series 1 amps that were produced at that time.

ETA: I don't remember the specs, but $100 is a great price for that amp. I saw one sell for $275 on another forum earlier this year. The IQX model is a rare one!

ETA2: I may have unfairly compared that amp to the Series 1 because I would have no problems running that PPI.

I had one in a 50x2, and used it for rear fill for a long time. Never had any problems from it at all. It was stolen along with three of my Art Series amps a couple of years ago. The only think I didn't like about it is that it had power and ground wires about 6 inches long coming directly out of the chassis of the amp, so you just had to splice those into your power and ground wires for your system. After a few installs they got shorter and shorter. Kinda lame.

a buddy of mine ran one a long time ago, not sure what model, but I think it was something like 100x2 and it bumped the hell out of his JL 12W1s... I was very impressed... I never heard anything bad about the old PPI amps.

I was never into PPI back in the good old days because.... get this... I thought the art series looked too girly. One of my friends swore by them and that was all he would run. They sounded good, but I didn't care for the pink crap on the amp.

Also, as much as I hate to admit it, I drank the Rockford Fosgate and Orion kool-aid back in the day. I also had a Linear Power 5002 that was stolen from me by a drug abusing uncle before I ever had a chance to install it in my vehicle. Till this day, I still hold a grudge against him for that even though he has cleaned up his act!

I would bet that a large number of stupid would underestimate a smaller number of smart people.
I just thought of something.... you still never sent me a photo of that robot underground sticker that I sent you from the other forum:laugh:

They were amps, they didn't sound like anything. You could get them in black, btw.

Nothing wrong with either of those companies back then.

I normally value your opinion, but we are going to have to agree to disagree here.... I performed a test with the same car, same component speakers, same music, same voltage output settings for a 1,000 Hz tone @ 75% volume using DIFFERENT amps. I will tell you one thing with certainty, ALL three amps did NOT sound the same!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

Here are the cliff notes of my results:

First, all three amplifiers were set to deliver a voltage output of 17.3 volts @ 1,000 Hz with the Alpine CDA-9885's volume level @ 26. Loudness and crossover were off AND bass/treble were set to flat!

The music was Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on CD!

The results:

Rockford Fosgate Power 351s - added tone correction to the lows and the highs, thus making the components sound bright on the high end and punchy on the low end but dull on the mid range. Even though the remote bass knob was not connected, I can say with certainty that this amplifier adds something to the low end and high end!

Linear Power 1502IQ - Sounded great on the highs with a punchy midbass. Then again, I think Linear Power seriously under rated this amp because it had tons of headroom. I was able to get to volume level 35 with no signs of clipping:eek:

Soundstream Reference 700s - Sounded great on the highs, but was really flat across the whole frequency spectrum. If I had to venture to guess, this amp was probably the flattest out of the bunch and did not color the sound in any way. I found the midbass to be lacking the "punch" that it should have had.

My girlfriend, myself, and one of my friends could tell the difference between the Rockford Fosgate and the other amps in my experiment. My girlfriend and I were the only two who could distinguish between the Linear Power and the Soundstream. My girlfriend and I liked the Linear Power better but my buddy could said he would have used either the Linear Power or the Soundstream. As you can see in my signature, I stuck with the Linear Power:D

Nothing wrong with either of those companies back then.
I miss the old school, made in the USA amplifiers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

To the OP, sorry for the thread hijack.

ETA: To helotaxi, I hope you didn't mean white art series to black art series because i am sure they would have both sounded the same //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
