IF you used thick enough plexi and sealed it well enough it'll sound the same as MDF, but i needs to be pretty thick, so itll be expensive.

It really depends on what subs you are running, and how much power you have for them. I heard most say to use thicker on the plexi than the MDF. If you were going to make a box out of 1/2 MDF, then use 3/4 plexi. Or if the box was 3/4 MDF then use 1" plexi. This is only what I have heard, but the cost of 1" plexi was too much. So back to the mdf I went.

The correct answer is:

Plexi is actually slightly stronger than MDF. Its not quite as rigid, but if you can get your hands on a piece of 1/2" plexi, try to bend it....it's about as easy as bending a similar piece of 1/2" MDF. I'd suggest 1/2" plexi for any common speaker box application.

Plexi is WAY expensive. I priced a sheet of 4*8 1/2" at a local autoglass dealership, and it was well over $500. Unless you're absolutely sure of what you're doing, I wouldn't recommend buying a sheet of plexi and trying to cut it into a box....that would be an easy way to waste $500.

If you can have the pieces cut for you by somebody who really knows what they're doing and have the money to burn, I say go for it. Just remember: you can't screw this stuff together the same as MDF. You'll have to buy a special type of sealent and drill pilot holes for the screws about every 3".
