Players w/ Tarnished Image

Why is it that sports fans in general always find it easy to root for the guy that has a tarnished image. Before this year I wasn't really a Jason Giambi fan, but now I find myself checking the box scores of the Yankees games just to see how he did. I really don't know why, but I just want to see him do good. Same thing with Mike Tyson, even though he's a mental case, I wanted him to be able to get back on top.

I know I'm not the only one out here who feels this way, so my question to everyone is what player with a tarnished reputation or off/on the field problems do you root for. Oh, and if Ricky Williams comes back, I will be rooting for him also.

I find I do the opposite //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I hope any player that finds themselves in that situation has a long, tough, difficult, hard road ahead of him; so when that player returns to the game, hopefully there's a lesson learned.

I don't root for the Yankees anyway, I'm a Boston fan //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Ray Lewis. Love that guy. When my son gets ready to play football(11 years from now) I am going to have him watch Ray Lewis films. Just not from last season.

i also wanted tyson to come back and do well im still a fan of his and allwasy will be even tho hes a lil crazy //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif. giambi i could care less i dont watch baseball unless i want to take a nap. and ricky williams i wont b wooting for he left his team and since i played footbal thru high school and when i saw good players slack or leave the team it pissed me off. So i wont b on his side this season but none the less hes good and better be jus as good as when he left

I'm not a Yankees fan either, I'm a White Sox fan. The media makes some things out to be worse than they are. I think a lot of times I root for certain athletes because I just want them to proove the media wrong. Maybe it's like rooting for the underdog.

The only thing I respect Giambi for is telling the truth...although it took a stand for him to do it on.

I don't respect Sheffield (he used to be my favorite player, have an old school Marlins jersey of his), and Bonds, because they 'didn't know' they were using steroids.

I personally pull for the good guys that are injury prone- Griffey for example. He's not a bad guy, and was at one time the best player in the game. It sucks to see how injuries have tarnished his career- perfect example, today I was listening to the radio (660 WFAN), and they were talking about how in the mid-late 90's, Bonds was considered a great player, but not quite on Griffey's level...now look how that has changed.

Another guy is Terrill Davis...I really felt bad for that guy...

You have to put yourself in Giambi, Sheffield, McGwire's shoes. Even had you done steroids, would you have said you did, risking the possibility of being prosecuted. The way I see it, it really isn't any of our business whether they did steroids or not, it's between them and the MLB. Some people say cheating in sports is everyone's business, but if you go back in history, you will find that at one point in time, some new gimmick was started, that supposedly gave players an edge, some of them tried it, some of them didn't.

So what you're saying is, people should put themselves in the shoes of someone who broke the law to try and understand why they would lie about it? And that somehow makes it alright or something? It's pretty simple man, they broke the rules and are trying to cover their *****. You don't have to think of it from the viewpoint of someone who gets paid millions to play baseball to understand it. They wouldn't find themselves in such a position if they abided by the rules of their employer.

And the fans are responsible for players being able to make such ridiculous salaries by paying entirely too much for tickets/food and drinks at the game, buying merchandise, watching them on TV, etc. etc. It's our business just as much as it is the MLB's. Especially in the case of Giambi, where his steroid use resulted in all those weird diseases he had last year and, the few times he played, was miserable.

With that being said, I can't root for Giambi. Not because of the steroids, but because he's just a douchebag.

I never said it makes it right. But I understand why they are lying about it. I would have lied to cover my *** too. But I wouldn't do steroids, I think the risks outweigh the benefits. In their cases, apparently they felt that the benefits outweighed the risks. I think the media makes all too much of it, and that they made Giambi their guinea pig, which is probably the reason I root for him. I didn't feel it was right singling him out, when many other players are believed to have lied about the same thing.

Why wasn't it right singling him out? He admitted under oath to doing 4 types of steroids while he was putting up absolutely ridiculous numbers in '00/'01. Then he gets weird parasites in his body that are linked to steroids, loses a ton of body mass and says he only lost 4 pounds, and puts up numbers that range from average to terrible. It'd be assinine not to single him out. Bonds was singled out because he's Barry Bonds, Sheffield wasn't singled out because it never affected his performance or lack thereof on the field.

And Giambi made himself a guinea pig, not the media.

i always loved bob probert, even after his cocaine problems. i just heard that he got busted again in florida for coke. i was always a fan of him though. since i was a little kid. i even grew a mullet to look like him when he was sporting it back in the day. joey kocer is my all time favorite though

Rasheed is so talented it's ridiculous....but it kills me to see him so completely content with disappearing for quarters/games at a time, and having no problem with being a teams 3rd option. He should be demanding the ball in the post when it's crunch time, but a good portion of the time he just does absolutely nothing or jacks up threes. Every year he seems to float around the perimeter more and more. I remember when he was on the Bullets when they had Juwan and Webber and he was coming off the bench, he'd always play great in limited minutes and put in serious work down low. I thought he'd elevate his game in Portland and become one of the best PF's in the league, but dude just doesn't get it.
