Atlanta Falcons coach Bobby Petrino has resigned and is expected to become the new head coach at Arkansas. Petrino was in his first season with the Falcons after spending four seasons as coach at Louisville.
Arkansas is looking for a new coach to replace Houston Nutt, who is the new coach at Ole Miss. The Razorbacks were said to be close to hiring Wake Forest's Jim Grobe last week, but Grobe decided to stay with the Demon Deacons. Arkansas also was reported to be considering Auburn's Tommy Tuberville and Clemson's Tommy Bowden, but each received a contract extension and more money to stay where they were.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on its Web site that Falcons officials said Petrino phoned in his resignation at about 5:45 p.m. EST Tuesday. He reportedly will not coach the Falcons' remaining three games.
"Bobby Petrino today submitted his resignation as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons," the Falcons' Web site said. "The Falcons will have no further comment until their news conference set for 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the club's Flowery Branch headquarters."
Various media outlets have said Petrino's Falcons contract does not include a buyout clause.
Petrino signed a five-year, $24 million deal with Atlanta in January. His deal with Arkansas, ESPN reported, would be for about $3 million per season.
Petrino's Falcons are 3-10 after Monday night's loss to New Orleans. Monday also was the day that Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in jail for his role in a dog-fighting ring.
Petrino has SEC experience, as he served as Auburn's offensive coordinator in 2002 before he took the Louisville coaching job.
His hiring at Arkansas will give the SEC West five coaches who makes at least $1.8 million per season: Alabama's Nick Saban, LSU's Les Miles, Petrino, Tuberville and Nutt.
