permanently sealing an explorers rear window

you sturrin at me brah?
i am sick and tired of this rear window on my explorer. i've gotten rid of just about every other rattle, but this window is still so bad you can hear it over the bass in the front seat. you can hear the thing from like 100 ft away. it has 2 mounting points at the top on each side, and one right in the center at the bottom, which it just pivots on. it also comes away from the weather seal quite a bit on each side and you can feel air blowing out even with the rest of the truck sealed up, so i'm losing a lot of sound.

i never open it anyway, i open the hatch itself when i need to get back there, so i'm wanting to permanently seal the window. problem is, i have no idea how to go about it. has anyone done this before, or have any ideas?

i'm thinking the easiest way might be to just find some super tall weatherstripping, to push it out enough it wont have room to pivot. i have no idea where i'd find something like that though, it would need to be huge.

daily driver... i'm thinking silicone wouldn't hold under the pressure. it probably pushes out about a 1/2 at the extreme points on each side. why do you think the weather stripping wouldn't be good?

now duct tape.... that just might do the trick!

I dont really think i understand what you mean with the weatherstripping, seems to me the only way to do it would be to force the window out with it so that it cant move at all, thus applying A LOT of pressure to the mounting points which could break. It would **** to be in the middle of a loud song going down the freeway when your hatch glass falls off.

Are you doing this cheap, or doing it the right way?

Id look into buying some plexi or lexan and bolting it to the explorer.

you can't suggest doing things the right way!!! for shame.

try silicone man. worst thing is it does not work.

open the glass, apply silicone all the way around (black?) and close it. i would prolly mask off the glass and paint on the outside because you can then take a spatula and scrape\wipe the excess away from the joint.

maybe try something more extreme like liquid nails.

also - to get a better bite, mabye sand the edge of the glass that hits that weather stripping? the silicone will have a better surface to adhere to if it is a little rough.

i think thats your best option for a cheap DIY DD fix.

Use the same stuff they use to put in your windshield. My friend owned a glass shop and he used this black urethane stuff. It dried only slightly soft, but was strong as hail....

Go by a glass shop and see if they can help you seal that thing up good. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I agree about using the weatherstripping, though, putting that much pressure on the mounting points might not be a good idear.

i have a tacoma ext. cab and sealed off my ext. cab windows. ( its my DD) i siliconed the outside widows, and inside under the winodw seal, then i ran dynamat overtop of the windows. they dont move at all.
