I just don't see getting a PhD as a part time deal.. i think it would require a total commitment (or as close as possible) to get it done in under a decade. To me it would be worth a sacrifice now in order to finish before i was 40.

I am pretty sure I can get through the classes. The research effort may require me to quit. I suppose I will make a new thread when I get there.

I would go for it, it does not matter where you get your PhD as long as you have it. You have to remember that the majority of the population, even extremely qualified students, never have the opportunity to attend an ivy league school for reasons other than academics. Employers know this, and if they see a PhD they are not going to look down on you just because you didnt get it at an ivy league. And I believe if you can bite the bullet and take the small income for that period of time the rewards when you have it will more than make up for it. And like you said, a big part of it will be making relationships for the future.

The second phrase is what kills me though.

I haven't went without a regular job since I was 15. I couldn't imagine a full immersion like that.

Atleast after this discussion, I feel more confident about it.

I think the fact that you began then finished a doctorate program (regardless of the university who hosts it while assuming it is an acredited school) will be of much greater import to those discussing it with you moreso than the exact school it came from.

There is a private university here in my hometown that happens to be the oldest private university west of the Mississippi River.

There is also a branch of LSU here.

Both have doctorate programs.

I'm not sure if i would like the total immersion or not either, but i sort of think that is what if required and would be very beneficial.

I personally don't like work, and would rather go to school full time ;p

I don't think I will walk around and people will call me Dr. I don't think it really works like that except in professional settings.

i always figured where i got my degree would never matter, because i'd be paving my own roads. I'm not concerned with what someone else thinks... I just want the knowledge. I can do the rest on my own. I'll just have to build my own bridges.

I think less of people that go to local schools and only get an AA degree, but regardless of what school you go to getting a PhD requires an intelligent and dedicated person which is a respectful position. Just my opinion
If you need help deciding if you want to do it or not just ask yourself if it will be making you money, or would it be making you happy? Both of those are a fine reason to do something regardless if its getting a PhD, or just getting a construction job that pays well or makes you happy. When it all boils down that is what it comes to.

If being happy is what you say is most important, than why do you look down on people for getting an A.A.S and entering the work force entry level?
