PC experts, geeks or tech savy! My display goes out randomly???

Hey guys, I need your guys help to try to pinpoint my PC issues. To start off I have a SONY VAIO desktop vgc-RB30 Windows XP HE and my monitor is a 17" Sony LCD.

My problem is that every now and then my display just goes dark, I could barely see the picture(really dark). Its like if the monitor display backlight goes out. As soon as I turn off the power of the monitor and turn it back on the picture comes back. It will do this randomly over and over again and sometimes not at all. It doesnt matter if the display has been on for hours or if I just turned it on.

My guess its the monitor...?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I had the same thing happen to my HP last year, time to get a new monitor

What GPU is in it? NVIDIA or ATI? May be a setting in the control panel that just needs set to be reset to default.

If possible try a different monitor for few hours. You can also use your laptops' display if you have one with a VGA port.

Most likely it is the video board. Hopefully you actually have a board and it's not integrated onto the motherboard, which if that is the case, you are fucked.

The transformer for the backlight is dying. Easy fix really, but the part is hard to come by.

If that is indeed the case, new monitor would probably be cheaper.

meh, maybe....im a cheap *** though, id try to find a smashed one for sale and theive the backlight board out of it...That's how I fixed my 8" dash screen in my jeep, had the same problem.
