I'm looking to troubleshoot, not work around the problem. If what Metra is saying is indeed the reality and that it will never be resolved until I replace the amp, then yes, a switch it the cheapest solution. Some more questions after some more tinkering: 1) Does it make sense that my radio is pulling a significant current draw with the car off? If I pull the multimedia fuse, I lose roughly the same draw as if I were to pull the amp fuse and I drop to roughly 0.28 A, so there's roughly 0.23 A going into the radio with it off. 2) I measured the voltage across the remote wire with and without the radio on. I get 13.3 V with the radio on and as soon as I turn it off it drops to mV. Does that mean that the radio is doing its job properly?
